Higher Education - Student enrolments

Data on the amount of students at our universities

  • In 2018/19 there were 31,475 enrolments in the four universities in the North East LEP area
  • The Universities of Newcastle and Northumbria the highest number of enrolments 32% and 28% respectively, whilst Durham and Sunderland had 22% and 18% respectively.
  • The subjects with the highest number of enrolments were:
    • Business and administrative studies
    • Subjects allied to medicine
    • Social studies
    • Biological sciences
  • These are provided by all four universities but there are other subjects that are particularly provided by one or two of the universities:
    • Engineering and technology (Newcastle)
    • Creative arts and design (Northumbria)
    • Languages (Durham and Newcastle)
    • Education (Durham and Sunderland).

In 2018/19, the English Core City LEPs featured broadly the same trends in the percentage of students enrolling in subjects. 

  • Business and administrative studies, Social studies and Subjects allied to medicine were all the most popular subjects in the West Midlands, North East and Leeds.
  • As the graph shows the West Midlands have the highest amounts of students in most subjects (57, 945 enrolled)
  • The North East and Greater Manchester have similar representations of subjects across all fields
  • Other well represented subjects across the English Core Cities are Education, Biological sciences, Engineering and technology and Social studies.
