Patents, trade marks and designs registered by businesses and individuals in the North East region

The Intellectual Property Office (IPO) publishes an annual statistical release for designs, patents and trade marks, based on administrative data. For UK-based applications, the data is broken down by nation and English region. The North East region includes the North East and Tees Valley LEP areas. From this region in 2019 there were:

  • 57 patents granted, 137 patent applications published and 260 patent applications filed
  • 1,236 trade marks registered, 2,359 total classes registered, 1,390 trade mark applications filed and 2,611 total classes in application
  • 151 designs registered and 168 design applications filed

These totals were all low compared to other English regions, when population is taken into account. Expressed as a rate per million adults, in 2019 in the North East region:

  • patents granted and patent applications filed were the lowest in England, patent applications published was the the third lowest
  • trade mark applications and registrations were both the lowest in England, as were total classes in application and registered
  • design applications and registrations were both the lowest in England

Indicative "success rates" of patents granted and designs registered in the North East were below those of England excluding London, while the equivalent for trade mark registrations was slightly higher. However, the main reason for low levels of patents being granted and trade marks and design registration in the North East region in 2019 was the low level of applications rather than the these differences in "success rates".
