Number of people living in the North East – total and by age band

In 2019, the estimated population of the North East LEP area was 1,993,997. This is the equivalent to 3.7% of the English population.  The graph below shows the population structure of the North East LEP compared to England excluding London and England.

The proportion of the population that are of working age (aged 16 to 64) in the North East LEP area is slightly above that of England excluding London and England. However, the area has an older age structure than these comparators as a whole, but also with a larger student age population. The North East has :

  • A larger proportion of its population in the 50 to 64 and 65+ age bands
  • A smaller proportion in the 0 to 15 and 25 to 49 age bands
  • A larger proportion of people aged 16 to 24.

Over the last 10 years, the population of the North East LEP area has grown by 4.0%. This is only just over half the rate of growth experienced by England (7.8%) and also much lower than for England excluding London (6.9%). In the North East:

  • The population of people aged 65+ increased by almost 21% between 2009 and 2019
  • The population aged 50 to 64 increased by just over 9%. Both of these percentage increases were smaller than nationally
  • The numbers of people aged 16 to 24 and 25 to 49 both decreased over the ten year period by about 4%
  • The number of children increased by just over 2%, a smaller percentage increase than nationally
