Population size and structure

Number of people living in North East – total and by age band

In 2018, the estimated population of the North East LEP area was 1,983,625. This is the equivalent to 3.5% of the English population.  The graph below shows the population structure of the North East LEP compared to England excluding London and England.

The proportion of the population that are of working age (aged 16 to 64) in the North East LEP area is very slightly above that of England excluding London and England. However, the area has an older age structure than these comparators as a whole, but also with a larger student age population. The North East has :

  • A larger proportion of its population in the 50 to 64 and 65+ age bands
  • A smaller proportion in the 0 to 15 and 25 to 49 age bands
  • A larger proportion of people aged 16 to 24.

Over the last 10 years, the population of the North East LEP area has grown by 3.8%. This is less than half the rate of growth experienced by England (8.0%) and also much lower than for England excluding London (7.0%). The North East LEP area’s lower population growth reflect both a lower rate of natural change (births minus deaths) and lower rates of in-migration.
