Vacancies index

The latest vacancy numbers in the North East region, compared to totals in February 2020

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) have created a vacancy index which expresses the latest vacancy numbers from Adzuna as a percentage of the total in February 2020, just before the impact of COVID-19 began. It only includes data down to regional level, where the North East region includes both the North East and Tees Valley LEP areas. In week ending Friday 26th March:

  • North East vacancy levels were at almost 130 per cent of their level in February 2020
  • this was well above the equivalent figure for England (98 per cent)
  • the North East and England percentages were, respectively, 89 and 61 percentage points higher than the 2020 low points in May
  • the North East percentage was at its highest level since February 2019 and was the largest among the nine English regions
  • the indices for London and the South East were particularly low (78 and 88 per cent of February 2020 levels).

There is no regional breakdown of vacancies by sector but the UK statistics include information about almost 30 Adzuna categories of sector. This shows that, at the end of March 2021, the latest UK vacancy levels were only above the February 2020 levels in eight sectors, most noticeably in:

  • transport and logistics and warehouse
  • manufacturing
  • construction
  • domestic help
  • facilities and maintenance
  • scientific and QA

The latest vacancy levels were at 80 per cent or less than in February 2020 in eight Adzuna categories. In particular:

  • catering and hospitality vacancies were less than half their level in February 2020
  • graduate job vacancies were at less than two thirds of their February 2020 equivalent
  • vacancy levels were also much lower than in early 2020 in legal, charity, voluntary, retail and administrative jobs.
