Understanding skills provision in the Offshore Wind industry

Energi Coast Skills Group commissioned a survey exploring skills provision in the North East.

Education and skills

Energy, including offshore wind, forms one of the four areas of strategic importance set out in the North East Strategic Economic Plan. In 2020 the North East Local Enterprise Partnership, in partnership with the North East offshore wind industry cluster group Energi Coast, facilitated the creation of the Energi Coast Skills Group.

The group provides strategic advice, support, and coordination of partners, to enable delivery of the objectives around the skills agenda for the cluster. As part of this work the group commissioned a survey into skills provision in the Offshore Wind industry which forms the basis of this report.

The Energy Sector in the North East

The North East is ready to deliver on global energy challenges at pace and at scale. As a region we are pioneering low carbon heat technologies, including:

  • river source heat networks
  • geothermal heat from mine workings
  • hydrogen for heat
  • heat pumps

As the national and international energy agenda focuses on clean growth, there are huge economic, social and environmental opportunities for the North East.

Through the Energy for Growth strategy, we are bringing the region’s energy sector together to deliver on the UK’s national energy strategy and drive economic growth in the North East.
